Y2DC was invited to refurbish the award winning venue MNKY HSE last year. The brief was to enhance the already successful design but to reimagine the upstairs offering a space that would function throughout the day and night. A space that was comfortable for guest to meet, drinks and/or party. Working closely with the team MNKY LNGE was opened last autumn. Since the refurbishment MNKY HSE has gone on to win London Lifestyle Award for: Lifestyle Business Award 2017.

The house, built in the 18th century style of the Wallis region, stands at the entrance to the village of Ernen. This house has now been renovated by Zimmer Schmidt Architekten. Its particular location became the underlying theme of the spatial transformation: the house is now defined not only by its view over the Rhone Valley, but also by the densely built village itself.

Working from the two separate holiday apartments originally found in the house, the architects have taken the location and orientation of the house in order to create a single holiday apartment that charms with its generously arranged living-dining-kitchen area.

A new, central body divides the individual areas of the communal zone: the living-dining room is on the one side; the kitchen on the other side features a corner bench and another place to eat. The overhead kitchen cupboards, the storage areas and the old fireplace all have their place in the new furnishings. The white surfaces add an accent in the interior, which is otherwise done completely in wood. To prevent shifting from the movements of the old floor, the fireplace has been clad with fire-protection panels attached with visible screws and then hung on the dividing wall concealed behind the spatial element.

On both sides of the communal area, the exposed log walls running from east to west form a dividing wall that shields the laterally arranged bedrooms and bathrooms. By repositioning the doors to the individual rooms, the now unnecessary openings can be used as niches and small shelving units.

In order to limit the palette of materials as much as possible, local sprucewood has been used for all new walls and flooring. The boards from the old screed floor have been reused and can now be found in the built-in fittings of the kitchen and bathroom. Thanks to their hardness and resilience, these larch planks make ideal work surfaces and seating as the corner bench in the kitchen. They have also been used as shelving in the bathroom.

As limited-edition design becomes a more popular and safe investment both regionally and internationally, Design Days Dubai will feature never-before-seen contemporary works alongside vintage and classic design pieces from the 20th century.  With a strong return rate from previously participating galleries, Design Days Dubai will welcome leading global galleries including Carpenters Workshop Gallery (London/Paris), R20th Century (New York), and Gallery Seomi (Seoul) as well as newcomers to the international design sector, such as Broached Commissions (Melbourne) and Galeria Mexicana de Diseño (Mexico City).  The fair has also witnessed close to double the number of regional galleries participating, with galleries from Dubai, Kuwait and Beirut taking part.

When completed by the end of next March, Sky City in Changsha will be the tallest skyscraper in the world, standing at 2,749ft (838m) high, over 220 floors. And remarkably, they’ve not started building it yet.

It took Dubai more than five years to build the world’s tallest building, the 828mBurj Khalifa, but architects and engineers at Broad Sustainable Building (BSB), a unit of the air conditioning maker Broad Group, are confident they can beat that record.

Critics have pointed out that BSB’s construction company has never built anything taller than 30 storeys before, but the builders seem unworried.

BSB senior vice-president Juliet Jiang told Construction Week Online that the company’s plan to construct the skyscraper “will go on as planned with the completion of five storeys a day.”

Designed by engineers who worked on the Burj Khalifa, Sky City will achieve the target by assembling BSB’s 95 per cent prefabricated modular technology at a breakneck construction pace. Nine of the world’s newest tallest 20 buildings are being built in China.

Adrian Smith, the Chicago-based designer of the Burj Khalifa who is working on the Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia, said at a meeting of the Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in Shanghai last month that rapid urbanisation in China would fuel major expansion in tall buildings.

“There are 179,000 people moving into urban areas every week. Do they go into a horizontal or a vertical city? It’s a question of economics,” said Mr Smith. BSB, currently responsible for 20 modular structures in China, demonstrated the construction method to a wider audience in January, when it constructed a 30-storey hotel in 15 days.

Foundation work is due to start at the end of the month, once local authorities approve the project. The slowing economy in China has led to some skyscraper plans being shelved, but the economy is still expanding at rates unheard of in the West. In China there is still considerable interest in building skyscrapers that show the rest of the world that your city or your company has truly arrived.

Changsha is probably best known as the hometown of Chairman Mao Zedong. Sky City’s projected cost is four billion yuan (£400m). Builders will use 220,000 tons of steel, and the structure will be able to house 31,400 people.

The company says the residential area will use 83 per cent of the building, while the rest will be offices, schools, hospitals, shops and restaurants. People will travel up and down using 104 high-speed elevators.

Sky City will consume a fifth of the energy required by a conventional building due to what BSB says is its unique construction methods, such as quadruple glazing and 15cm-thick exterior walls for thermal insulation. When it is finished it will be taller than the Shanghai Tower, which was supposed to be China’s tallest building, at 632m, when completed in 2014.

There are 239 buildings taller than 200m being built in the country,. At the end of last year, there were only 61 buildings taller than 300m in the world, but in five years, China will have more than 60.

The Sheraton Heathrow Hotel put the finishing touches to a multimillion-dollar refurbishment of its public areas. The refurbished Sheraton Heathrow now boasts a completely new reception and lobby lounge, two new bars, a new restaurant and a new cafe complete with self-service technology.

Designed by Nico Yiannikkou of interior design company Y2DC, the renovated spaces feature open areas connected through a common theme of travel and exploration.

Inspired by the Middlesex countryside around Heathrow Airport, which is famed for its orchards, all of the new restaurants and bars at the hotel take their name from the traditional English apple.

The main restaurant, The Orchard, now features timber partitions and interconnecting screens in the ceilings. Playing on the location of the hotel, a “globe” chandelier is suspended between the screens, while the feature table at the venue entrance is inspired by aviation design. The restaurant serves traditional English dishes.

With its travel-inspired decor, the hotel’s main bar has been named the Discovery Bar and will focus on beers, wines served by the glass and cocktails. Decoration in the Discovery Bar includes old trunks and suitcases as features, furniture fabrics imprinted with feint vintage postcard texts of by-gone travellers and a wall mural depicting an art deco map of the world. With its focus on local produce, the Discovery Bar menu features local ales from Windsor and Marlow.

The Orange Lounge is the hotel’s brand new cocktail bar. The venue boasts dark colors, a central fireplace, and partitioning using timber screens with the design inspired by the idea of aircrafts taking off and landing. Artwork on the theme of aviation in the form of black and white prints is also available.

The transformed Sheraton Heathrow will also offer the Link Café, which combines the Link@SheratonSM experienced with Microsoft, a communications hub in the lobby which provides complimentary Wi-Fi and PC workstations.

The public area refurbishment at the Sheraton Heathrow is part of the Sheraton brand’s multi-year revitalization effort which has seen Sheraton invest more than $6 billion in opening new hotels and renovating existing Sheraton properties across the globe.

Dubai, the heartland of the Middle East and a country with only 40 years of history, is approaching the outside world with an open mind and welcoming arms. Already a playground for international starchitects, it is now luring in international designers and galleries too. Last week it played host toDesign Days Dubai, the first fair dedicated to collectible design in the Middle East, which saw a troop of international and local galleries come together to flaunt their wares before the region’s growing breed of eager collectors.

DDD’s director Cyril Zammit concept- ualized, organized, marketed and executed the fair in the space of just eight months, strategically starting it a few days ahead of Art Dubai, when many of the local collectors were already starting to scout for new works.

A total of 22 galleries from around the world gathered in the spacious, purpose-built tent in front of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, hugged by shopping Mecca, the Dubai Mall. It brought together fair regulars like Carpenters Workshop Galleryfrom London, Priveekollektie from The Netherlands, Nilufar from Milan, as well as 20th century dealers like La Galerie Nationale from Paris and R20th Century Gallery from New York.

Local players included Wallpaper* Design Award-winner Carwan Gallery, and SMO Gallery from Beirut. There were also some fresh names in the line u, such as Sao Paulo’s +Coletivo Amor de Madre and Seoul’s _Croft, who had its first showcase of work outside its home town.

Some of the most well-received pieces included the Austrian-based design studioMischer’Traxler’s ‘Gradient Mashrabiya Sideboard’, designed for Carwan Gallery. Working with Lebanese artisan Roger Tohme, they translated ‘mashrabiya’ – a typical Middle Eastern architectural feature, incorporating lattice woodwork – into a sideboard composed of a network of more than 650 individual pieces of hand-carved wood.

Rodrigo Almeida’s ‘Oxum chair’ for +Coletivo Amor de Madre (which translates as ‘a collective of mother’s love’) gave us an idea of what post-Campana Brazilian design could be. Meanwhile, Beirut-bornNajla El Zein caught attention with an elegant light sculpture for SMO Gallery, entitled ‘6302 Spoons’.

The education program also played an important part in DDD. Live design performances by Korean designerKwangho Lee and Amsterdam’s Studio Drift, as well as seminars on investing in design-art by Li Edelkoort and Rabih Hage, were organized to cultivate and encourage the future generation of design collectors.

The four-day fair and a ladies-only afternoon attracted over 8,500 visitors from around the region. Strong sales were reported by some galleries, and others spoke about the importance of bolstering their contacts in the Middle East, but the pervading feeling at the fair was of an eagerness for creative ‘newness’, and an excitement about about the future of the design industry.
