New rule: good things happen when you wander into antiques stores in Nolita. Good things like discovering an opulent new shop tucked away in the back room of one.

The proprietors of this secret shop: nearly two-century-old Scottish suit-making legends Holland & Sherry, who’ll be offering custom suits, clothing and furniture along with exotic found objects in their first official store starting Monday. Herewith, the four facts you need to know.

Everything is custom. Shirts, suits, bags and furniture are all at your bespoking mercy. If that burgundy embroidered silk couch catches your eye, feel free to tell them to craft you a robe out of it. And a rug… And while they’re at it, maybe an eye patch.

If you can see it, you can have it. You’ll notice all the lobster-based taxidermy decorating the place. It’s art. French art. And it’s for sale. Just like the antique Monte Carlo gambling table the John Smedley sweaters are stacked on, and the vintage cocktail shakers in the glass case.

There’s a bar. It’s stocked with whiskey, and it’s not for decoration.

You should get on a first-name basis. Share your hopes and dreams. Grab a seat, have a dram and tell them about your vision for a more velvet-ensconced existence. It’s an intimate, homey (if home is a country that does a lot of offshore banking) enterprise. So the sooner you’re operating on a basis of mutual, impeccably tailored trust, the sooner you’ll be welcome to use that Savannah-esque sculpture garden outside for parties.

All the better to show off your new tuxedo racing suit.

Wether you like this quirky chair design by 56th Studio or not, you can’t deny that it stirs some sort of emotional reaction. In that sense, they could be equated to art that can be sat upon. 56th Studio is a multidisciplinary design studio, involved in graphic, product, prop and set design, to name a few. They describe their style as “luxe-personified yet kitschy, neo-ethnic, eclectically bold and youthful”. We like these chair designs because they are surprising and different. Given that most of the chairs seem to have somewhat of a face, it seems they have their own personalities. La storia inizia nel 1928 con Carlo Boffi che, da artigiano, si conquista la fama di uno dei migliori intagliatori di sedie, capace di riproporre lo stile tipico francese del periodo Louis XV – Louis XVI.

L’azienda

Nel 1953 iniziano a collaborare i figli Federico, Roberto e Michele e nel 1968 viene costruito il nuovo stabilimento di Lentate. Arriva poi il momento della tecnologia – intagli in legno, lucidature, laccature e qualità dei materiali – ma arriva anche la decisione di uscire dal piccolo mondo della Brianza ed aprirsi al mondo con la curiosità di chi sa fare ma anche di chi vuole esplorare ed imporre cose nuove per poi fonderle nella propria azienda. Forse e’ proprio questo il vero DNA della Fratelli Boffi, nata e riconosciuta per un mobile “che dura nel tempo”, che ha permesso all’azienda di crescere e di espandersi all’estero e soprattutto nel campo delle grandi forniture

WHEN I LISTENED TO THOSE WORDS FROM HIS HISTORIC 2005 COMMENCEMENT SPEECH AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY, STEVE JOBS HAD NOT YET REVOLUTIONIZED THE CELL PHONE INDUSTRY, UNVEILED THE FASTEST SELLING COMPUTER OF ALL TIME, NOR HAD APPLE BECOME THE MOST VALUABLE COMPANY IN THE WORLD. IN THE DAYS FROM THAT SPEECH UNTIL HIS RECENT PASSING IN OCTOBER 2011, STEVE DEMONSTRATED HOW PRECIOUS AND VALUABLE TIME CAN BE.

At the commencement he said, “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.” He told us, “No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.” But most importantly, he stated, “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.”

Steve’s legacy has inspired us at Restoration Hardware to trust our instincts and follow our heart. Philip Nimmo’s Fashion-Inspired Collection

Available in a plethora of finishes, the collection features plenty of dark woods, metal legs and lounge-worthy chairs and sofas. Not one to shy away from accessibility, Philip Nimmo designs everything from chandeliers to sconces to side tables. His latest collection hit showrooms last fall.
Nimmo’s work is recognized by his signature embellishments and many of his design inspirations stem from fashion. Vintage bangles and pendants inspired the Ramona side table, for example, which features a gold-leaf interior and Starfire glass top. Additionally, the Martin dining chair is described by Tamar Mashigian, Marketing Executive for Phillip Nimmo, as “a black dress with a most fabulous buckle across the low back.”
