26 April – 26 May 2012

The Willer gallery is proud to present a unique exhibition of the complete series of limited edition bronze candelabras created by Lynn Chadwick, shown together for the first time.

Lynn Chadwick is one of the pre-eminent British sculptors of the 20th Century. During a career spanning over 50 years until his death in 2003 he secured an international reputation underpinned by major prizes, important commissions, and a lifetime of private and public exhibitions, culminating with a major retrospective at Tate Britain in late 2003. Represented in the world’s leading public and private collections, increasing recognition of his major contribution to British sculpture ensures that his reputation continues to grow.

Throughout his career, Chadwick’s work drew on the natural world in abstracted human and animal forms, and developed archetypal constructions instantly recognisable to those familiar with his work.

But even those well versed in Chadwick’s oeuvre are unlikely to be familiar with his fascination for a domestic object, the candle holder, which he returned to at regular intervals throughout his life. Never previously shown together, the candelabras, seen as a whole, undoubtedly reflect, and are a part of, all the elements being explored in his ‘pure’ sculpture.

Chadwick clearly did not approach the candelabras as an element apart requiring special treatment. They were as much a part of his life and work as the wonderful fire pit hood he created for the monumental main room at his home, Lypiatt Park in Gloucestershire. Some are forms into which holes were punched for holding candles, others were scooped out for the purpose, and still others harked back to his early career working in an architect’s practice and as a designer.

Like the well known sculptures, the candelabras are cast in bronze, a material that dominated his work. The working of their surfaces – in texture, relief, and patination – also mirrors Chadwick’s main body of work. Cast in the same foundry as his other sculptures, using the same methods which he rigorously managed and controlled.

The only tacit acknowledgement of any difference between the candle holders and his other creations may be found in the larger editions Chadwick authorised for these functional pieces, which he often used in dramatic large groups. In all other respects they can stand alone, with or without candles, as fascinating examples of his work, creations spanning virtually the whole of his working life.

Misewell’s Eileen Floor Lamp

Eileen is one elegant partner in any room. She cooly leans against a wall or corner by way of a steel base, aluminum neck and spun shade. Machined, stainless-steel fittings allow neck to smoothly pivot, while creating friction for shade height adjustability. Milwaukee-based Vincent and Paul Georgeson launched Misewell in 2008, and caught the attention of the design world–and us–when they took the Best New Designer Award at ICFF the next year. The brothers believe in furniture that is simple, functional and honest. They are committed to responsible manufacturing, creating long-lasting, high-quality furnishings with minimal environmental impact. Besides steel and aluminum, the Georgeson’s use American, mostly locally sourced maple and walnut.

Nud Pendant Light Cord

The details separate great from good design, said designer-architect Mies van der Rohe. With that in mind, Staffan Svensson considered the pedestrian light cord and holder and founded NUD Collection. He also gave designers Eva Angwald and Charlotte Falck carte blanch when it comes to colors. Transform a room in a snap. Comes with an E27 porcelain socket, white plastic ceiling cap and 118″ of textile cable. Approved for North American use.

Check out the rest of their collection in their Venice store.

You’ve been leading two lives.

At your desk, you’re all business. When you’re partying, you’re… all business. About perfecting the worm.

But it’s time to think bigger. Because your desk could bethe party…

Introducing the LD120 Hi-Fi Soundsystem+Laptop Desk—in short, it’s a desk that doubles as a profoundly powerful European DJ booth—available now at A+R on Abbot Kinney.

Suddenly, it’s like your current desk is a bland, squirming caterpillar… instead of a beautiful butterfly whose beating wings will melt your face off. (Figuratively speaking… we hope.)

And sure, as for the desk aspect of this thing, you can sit here with your laptop and type things. Works great. Hours later, it’ll still hold up your laptop. But at a certain point, whether you set this up in your office or your living room, you’re going to want to plug your laptop right into it. Invite a few dozen people to join you. And see what it can do.

It’s got a digital-to-analog converter built in (makes the sound seem much less like it’s coming out of a laptop), along with a whopping seven speakers—two of which are at the back of the desk, made to reflect sound off the wall behind for even greater audio firepower.

The office next door is gonna love you.

Here’s the luxurious Martell Trunk which we adore.

The trunk is actually the ultimate blend-cognac-at-home-cocktail-unit. It’s a precious toy, with lots of specials, for connaisseurs who want to play, to experiment with different eaux-de-vie. And yes, there is an ice machine in this huge blue box.

Martell La Malle Trunk Pinel & Pinel

Martell La Malle Trunk Pinel & Pinel

Martell have teamed up with luxury French luxury designer Pinel and Pinel to create a combination of pure opulence.  The trunk has revealed compartments and drawers embellished with soft leather and a myriad of fine crystal glasses and carafes.

Blend your own Cognac

Now, the cool thing about this 150.000 € trunk is, that you can actually blend your own cognac. Create your own cognac – that’s the idea. Use the little book, with pre printed tasting notes structure, fill the mix into a bottle.. or make a cocktail. But that perhaps rather with the VSOP. Crush the ice. Everything seems to be possible with this upscale luxury set.

Cognac bottles in Martell trunk

The trunk icludes the whole range of Martell bottles, and 4 exclusive blends, that you can blend again. Those 4 are single Cru blends from the different growth area of the cognac appellation Fins Bois, Borderies, Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne millesimes, vintages. The Fins Bois is quite remarkable.

Humidor in the trunk

And of course there is one L’Or de Jean Martell bottle, in the center of the trunk, further down you find candles, scents and a humidor – a worthy accompaniment to these prestigious bottles of cognac.

Knives and cocktail equipment

Further adding to this trunk of luxury are twenty eight unique and classic wristwatches which bathe in the soft light which caresses the interior. We also find knives, cocktail utilities.

Candles, a notebook for tasting notes and more

It’s basically a cocktail bar. But you can’t call it that way, it’s just too exclusive. Truly a stylish creation of functional luxury. The brand of Martell succeeds in balancing tradition, modern understatement and desire.

Ice machine in the trunk

There is an ice machine, and a crusher, and a bottle where you can fill  in your new home made blend. And you will discover many other little details. Everything is well organized. You also find little lamps at the top of the trunk, which enlight the interior. They are shaped in a way that they remind of alambic pot still elements, and are made of copper.

Eaux-de-vie from Martells paradise cellar

The trunk was launch at a cocktail event, in a villa in Paris. Good athmosphere, food, music, and some cigars added up to a nice evening.

Here we see the four exclusive bottles. For explenation: If it says e.g. No.4 on the label, it means there are four different millesimes in this blend. The maitre du chai of Martell told us a bit about those. Those eaux-de-vie were selected from the paradise cellar of Martell.

The Martell Trunk or La Malle is a giant of understatement, something to interact with. You so want it in your living room.

They have quickly established themselves as a quirky an innovative little brand that produces trunks at the absolute highest eschelons of luxury.

We thought we would show a few more of Pinel et Pinel’s creations.

One of the prettiest zombies of the real estate collapse is finally coming back to life. The condo tower at 290 Mulberry Street has been nearly finished for years now, but the developer fell into trouble, the building bounced around a bit, and only now is it coming back on the market, as a rental.

Karass Development picked up the project, and with the help of Citi Habitats broker Lucie Holt, it has been rebranded as Mulberry House, a rental building that has just come on the market. From the marketing materials:

All residences at Mulberry House include private keyed elevators, radiant-heat Walnut flooring, security camera systems, central A/C and oversized double-glazed windows.

State-of-the-art kitchens boast custom gloss-white cabinetry with stone countertops, Bosch gas cooktops and ovens, Miele dishwashers and Liebherr stainless steel refrigerators.  In addition, all kitchens feature Marvel wine coolers to keep bottles at the perfect temperature.

The lofts’ bathrooms are equally luxurious.  Designed as a spa-like retreats, Mulberry House baths boast custom vanities and concrete tubs designed by SHoP Architects.  All residents will appreciate amenities including the full-time lobby attendant, common terrace located on the second floor, and the available private storage units.

The interior is still being completed and the rental prices remain undecided.

“Mulberry House offers rental residences that are unlike anything available in SoHo,” Ms. Holt said in a release. “The breathtaking modern design, top-of-the line finishes, and privacy offered to residents, are all truly spectacular.”

This may be the nicest news on Houston Street since they reinstalled “The Wall” in 2007—about the same time poor old Mulberry House got underway.

architecture, empire state building, new york design, One World Trade Center, Skyscraper

By MATT CHABAN 4/30 7:02pm

As of today, as you probably already know, 1 World Trade Center reached the historic height of 1,271 feet, eclipsing the Empire State Building and reclaiming its place as the tallest building in the city. In honor of that achievement, the tower will be lit up red, white and blue tonight. The Observer asked Tony Malkin, owner of the iconic tower, what he thought of being No. 2 again.

“The world’s most famous office building, the ancestor of all super-tall towers, welcomes our newer, taller cousin to the skyline,” Mr. Malkin responded in an email. “We’ve watched you grow, and now we salute you.” He signed it as “Empire State Building.”

It is a fitting tribute, if also unusual, considering Empire State Building staff were told not to discuss its “cousin’s” ascent, according to New York magazine.

Meanwhile, Curbed had a rather amusing video of the history-making column rising to the top of 1 World Trade. It underscores both the banality and the eager emotions surrounding this milestone. We have waited so long for that column to be but into place, though it is still just a 26-foot-long piece of structural steel. This is just another construction site, but also the most important one in the world.
